SwarGanga Logo SwarGanga was started by Adwait Joshi as an effort to promote Indian Classical Music and young and upcoming artists in the field of Indian Classical Music. SwarGanga started on 19th October 2004 as a yahoo group http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/swarganga/join. Later on SwarGanga's Website (www.swarganga.org) was developed to educate people about different concepts of Indian Classical Music. SwarGanga currently has over 2 million visitors from 140 different countries every year. Thanks to you all for making this site so popular.

I think that the theory and practice of Indian music are the logical result of a consistent development, a distinctive process, which plays an integral part in Indian history and culture. One should not listen to Indian music and judge it in terms of Western music or any other musical form. It would be like judging Beethoven or Brahms in terms of raag (the basis of Indian melody) and Taal (the basis of Indian rhythm). A listener is requested to forget counterpoint, harmony, and mixed tone colours for a moment and to relax into the rhythmic and melodic patterns.

The totally diverse factor from the western classical music is that this type of music is not prewritten or pre-rehersed. The artist might have a few raags in mind that he/she would decide to present but that too can change on farmaish from the audience (the audience's preference of the raag they would like to listen to).

To learn about different concepts of classical music such as sur, patti, taal, raags, please go through the series of articles starting here.

SwarGanga School of Music and E-Learning

SwarGanga School of Music was started in 2008 in Duluth (a suburb of Atlant) Georgia, USA. Since its inception in 2008, it has gotten a lot of good feedback. We at SwarGanga wanted to take this idea and implement it in such a way that students all across the world can take advantage of the school. Thankfully with the help of technology we are able to do this! We offer Indian Classical Music classes on the internet now. You can signup using the feedback form to get more information. Over the next few days, we will launch a SwarGanga School of Music portal.

Another improvement on the website is that along with the bandishbase you can purchase audio/video recordings and/or notations for the bandish. This will not only help students to learn on their own but will also give a platform for teachers to share their music lessons with others. It does not cost anything to participate in the program. Infact, music teachers can record bandishes in their own voice and put them up for sale. This model works on the basis of revenue sharing.
